“That’s right ladies and gentlemen, step right up, and learn how you can gain financial independence.
I’m going to share how a yard sale netted us over $5000, with no expensive items sold!
For a limited time and for the low low price of…..I will unlock the secrets so you……dribble dribble babble babble.
Aren’t you amazed at how many “get rich quick” plans are out there? Most promise to show you a short cut to wealth. That is if you “buy” into their plan.
I suck at being a neighbor. For over 5 years, I couldn’t tell you the names of anyone, except for the ones that live next door, and across the street. Even with them, I was only good for a wave, or a quick, “hey, how are you?” “Great, me too, gotta run, see ya.”
However, one sunny Saturday in May, we posted up and had a yard sale. Strangest thing, I caught myself being genuinely interested in meeting people. Over the course of the day, we met several new neighbors, as well as bargain hunters from all over.
Early that afternoon, I approached a shopper looking looking at some items. Instead of the typical yard sale negotiations that play out like this;
“Hi, like those?”
“Yea, how much?”
“This much.”
“Really?, that much.”
“Think that’s too much?”
” I just wasn’t thinking that much.”
“OK, so how much were you thinking?”
“I was thinking this much.”
“Wow, that’s not much, how about our much’s meet in the middle?”
“Ok, deal.”
“Deal, sold .”
It was more like….. well actually it was pretty much just like that, BUT in addition, we engaged in conversation.
I learned he bought and sold antiques and vintage items. I shared that I had more stuff elsewhere and we exchanged numbers.
The following week, he came out and purchased more stuff. During the visit we shared some of our stories, and learned more about each other.
He shared that once a month he set up at an antique show. In June we went to the show, visited with him, and learned the space next to him was available. He encouraged us to give it a try, and put us in contact with the promoter.
Over the next few weeks, I relapsed into my “hermit” state and didn’t follow back up with him. We did decide that we would rent the spot the next to him at the monthly show, to see if we could sell some of our wares.
We did well, and continued to set up the rest of the season.
If you’ve been following the blog, you know what’s coming.
This was the result of learning “the rest of the story.”
Instead of the normal pleasantries exchanged during an introduction, or transaction, our conversation went deep enough to share what’s under the surface.
If that hadn’t happened, we would have never set up at the antique show.
So, the time taken to get to know my yard sale shopper, led to additional business from him, insight and help in setting up at a few antiques shows that generated just north of $5000 in sales.
Yet, that’s not the most valuable part of the equation. I’ve gained a new friend, that’s mentored me in selling antiques, that’s challenged me intellectually, and is fun to be around. Someone you can consider a true friend, is far more valuable than money.
“You can unlock the secrets, Not for $29.99 Not for $19.99”
“Right now, it will only cost you……. a little bit of time….that’s right, just time.”
Just taking the extra time to engage beneath the pleasantries, may open up a blessing you never would have experienced otherwise.
I never thought I had the time. I was really missing out. I know, it’s hard as life will try to get in the way.
In this case, it put some cash in the coffers, and a new friendship has blossomed.
Try it. While you may not parlay a yard sale into $5k, I’m confident you’ll be equally blessed.
